Important Information

Section 504

 

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in federally assisted programs or activities solely by the basis of disability. The district shall make its programs and facilities accessible to all its students with disabilities. The East Moriches Union Free School District affirms its compliance with those sections of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 dealing with program accessibility.  The district shall also identify, evaluate and extend to every qualified student with a disability under Section 504 a free, appropriate public education, including reasonable modifications, accommodations, specialized instruction or related aids and services, as deemed reasonable and necessary to meet their educational needs as adequately as the needs of non-disabled students are met.  Questions and requests for additional information (including complaint procedures) concerning the East Moriches Union Free School District’s compliance with Section 504 should be directed to the building principal.

Homeless Families

​

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act is federal legislation that discusses the public education of children and youth experiencing homelessness. Under McKinney-Vento and state law, students are considered homeless if they lack a nighttime residence that is fixed, regular, and adequate. Examples of temporary housing explicitly include:

  • Sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship or other similar reason

  • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, camping grounds

  • Living in emergency or transitional shelters

  • Abandoned in hospitals

  • Living in a public or private place not designed for sleeping

  • Living in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, bus or train stations, etc.

  • Migratory living in the circumstances described above
